These
are the words that Galilee Missionary Baptist church
was founded on 72 years ago. The church began with a
very small membership at the corner of Buck and Booker
T., under the leadership of Rev. E. J. Galloway. In
1932 the members saw to improve the church by adding
water, lights and gas. In 1949, the church building
was destroyed by fire. At that time they were granted
the privilege to worship in the afternoon at the New
Testament Baptist church. Not to long after that Grace's
Funeral Home at 3601 Providence opened their doors and
welcomed Galilee to have the services in the mortuary.
Services were held at Grace's Funeral Home for approximately
two years. These were years of hard time and poverty.
The indebtedness to reconstruct and buy was beyond the
mastery of the congregation. At that time Pastor E.J.
Galloway offered the membership a portion of his property
to build a new place to worship. On May 11, 1951 a groundbreaking
service was held for the new building that was built
on 1401 Worm Street. In 1979 Pastor Galloway was called
home to be with the Lord. Upon his death in 1980, Rev.
F. LaVergne was elected to serve as Pastor for the church
until January 1981. Following his departure Rev. V.R.
Jefferson was elected as Pastor in May 1981. Under his
leadership, the membership and property increased. The
property extended to include the majority of the block
on Worm Street. Rev. V.R. Jefferson retired in spring
of 2002 due to his health. Galilee Missionary Baptist
church is now under the leadership of Rev. Byron Wyatt,
who was elected a Pastor November 22, 2002.

As
you can see over the years the church grew in numbers
as well as in strength. They continue to stand on the
promise of God, "Upon this rock I'll build my church,
and the gates of hell shall not prevail against thee".
On November 1, 2003 Galilee Missionary Baptist church
celebrated the groundbreaking for their new building
project. Members, family and friends, as well as some
Houston leaders came out to worship and rejoice for
what God has already done and for what He is going to
do. Everyone had on their hard hats that symbolized
the construction of their new facility. People fellowshipped
with one another and walked the lot where the new building
stands. Pastor Byron Wyatt brought forth the word of
God, they sang "We've come this for by faith" and there
was plenty of food for everyone to enjoy. What a joyous
and historical occasion. Galilee Missionary Baptist
Church is committed to provide sound biblical preaching
and teaching of God's Word. Their goal is to win souls
to Christ and to nurture the spiritual growth for all
ages by enhancing personal living, family living and
social congregation in the development of a life of
devotion and praise. With the new building project there
will not be limited ministries and programs. The new
facility will have a worship area that will seat over
500, with classrooms, a conference center and a nursery,
which will enhance the quality of the ministry as they
seek to serve the community.
Thoughts
from Galilee Missionary Baptist Church Pastor Byron
Wyatt:
I
can only thank God for His divine favor. God has truly
orchestrated this entire building project. I can't and
won't take any credit. I give God all of the glory.
I have to also give kudos to the faithfulness of the
Galilee Family. God has shown us through this whole
building project that His delay is not denial. In addition,
the vision that God has given me can only be summed
up with 1 Cor 2:9, "But as it is written, Eye hath not
seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart
of man, the things which God hath prepared for them
that love him." In other words, "You Ain't Seen Nothing
Yet!"
